Ducking Glossary 🦆

New to the flock? Here's the language of Jeep ducking, cruise ship ducking, and DuckyTrack — from a duck drop to a palmate.

Jeep Ducking

Duck Jailalso: Duck Prison
A humorous concept and graphic motif depicting mischievous or “too silly” ducks locked behind bars.
Duck Pond
The dashboard area right behind the windshield, used as a display case for a collection of rubber ducks.
Duck Swapalso: Duck Trade
The organized or spontaneous exchange of rubber ducks during off-road meet-ups, trail rides, or community events.
Ducked
The state of having received a rubber duck on one's vehicle — a sign of peer recognition.
Duckeralso: Cruise Ducker
A community member who tags and gives out rubber ducks. On Jeeps it means placing ducks on other vehicles; on cruises it means packing and hiding prepared ducks around the ship.
Ducking
The act of placing a rubber duck on an exterior component (mirror, door handle, or hood) of a parked Jeep.
Ducking for Teachers
A philanthropic fundraising campaign inspired by Allison Parliament, backed by corporate sweepstakes.
Mall Crawler
A highly customized off-road Jeep that rarely, if ever, actually travels off-road trails.
Self-Ducking
Buying ducks and placing them on one's own dashboard to artificially inflate community recognition.
The Flock
A driver's accumulated dashboard collection — or, more broadly, the whole community of ducking participants.
Twelve 4 Twelve
An official monthly manufacturer program dropping limited-edition Wranglers paired with highly collectible thematic ducks.

Cruise Ducking

Cabin Crawl
A passenger-organized social event touring different stateroom categories on sea days, where ducks are frequently hidden.
Conquackulations
A congratulatory pun printed on duck passports to celebrate the finder's discovery.
Cruising Ducks
The practice of hiding decorated rubber ducks in public ship corridors and lounges for other guests to find.
Duck Drop
The deliberate, discreet placement of a prepared rubber duck in a public, accessible spot on the ship.
Duck Hoarderalso: Duck Pirate
A passenger who claims and keeps vast quantities of ducks without rehiding them or yielding to children.
Duck Hunting
The active, coordinated search of public spaces on a cruise ship to find hidden rubber ducks.
Duck Passportalso: Duck Tag
A laminated tag on a cruising duck listing the hider's name, ship, sail date, hometown, and logging instructions.
Fish Extenderalso: FE
A pocketed wall organizer hung from the metal fish or seahorse peg outside Disney Cruise Line stateroom doors.
Keep or Hide, You Decide
The governing slogan of the subculture — finders get to decide whether to keep the duck or hide it again.
Pixie Dusting
A Disney Cruise Line variation where small gifts, including custom ducks, are left at cabin stateroom doors.
Stealth Duck
A duck hidden in challenging, less obvious places — deep in plant foliage, artwork crevices, or behind decorative pillars.

DuckyTrack Terms

Adopt-a-Duck
When an owner moves on, their released ducks live on with the community instead of disappearing.
Cruise Mode
DuckyTrack's offline app mode for scanning ducks with no internet (for example, at sea); finds sync once you're back online.
Duckster
A DuckyTrack member. Ducksters earn points and levels for releasing and finding ducks.
Duckster Chat
The finders-only chat on each duck's profile, where people who scanned it leave messages and photos.
Findalso: Scan
Discovering a released duck and scanning its QR or NFC tag to log where it's been.
NFC Tagalso: Tap-to-track
A tap-to-track tag — tap your phone to it to log a find, with no app or camera needed.
Palmate
DuckyTrack's duck-foot up/down vote on comments — the webbed feet point up (approve) or down. Net upvotes earn the author Duckster points.
QR Tag
A free printable code you scan with your phone's camera to open a duck's page and log a find.
Release
Placing a tagged duck out in the world — on a Jeep, on a cruise, anywhere — for a stranger to find and track.
The Duckling
DuckyTrack's own ready-to-go pack: a pre-programmed NFC tag, a holographic sticker, a redeem code, and quick-start instructions.
